BYD Qin is best-selling EV in China so far in 2014

2014 and 2015 are shaping up to be China’s time to shine in the plug-in vehicle spotlight. The Tesla Model S is making an appearance. The BYD Denza EV is coming. The China-built version of the Nissan Leaf, the Venucia Morning Wind, will roll off the line. All this is happening just in time, too, since the government has said it wants five million plug-in vehicles on the streets by 2020.

To start things off, though, it’s a local kid who has claimed the sales crown. According to the National Passenger Car Association of China, the BYD Qin (pronounced “cheen”) PHEV is the best-selling plug-in vehicle for the first quarter of 2014, following record sales months in January and February. Sadly, BYD hasn’t released actual sales numbers, but did say that it sold over 6,000 units in the first weeks of 2014. That’s a big turnaround from the plug-in car that the Qin replaces, the F3DM.

The Qin PHEV has a 0-62 mile-per-hour time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 115 mph. The car also has a relatively long EV range – 44 miles – and a fuel economy rating of 177 MPGe. The Qin starts at around the equivalent of $32,000 US.
