General Motors has identified two cities that it believes are ready for the Chevy Volt: San Francisco and Washington, D.C. GM announced today at the Washington (D.C.) Auto Show that it is collaborating with these cities to expedite the availability of its serial hybrid and to allow the Volt to hit the ground running.
For other cities that want to get in on the plug-your-car-in action, the automaker has outlined a plan that’s supposed to make the transition from gas to electric a bit more seamless, including getting a proper charging infrastructure set up, setting attractive electricity rates and drafting PHEV-friendly legislation. Besides local governments, universities and utility companies will need to get on board with the plan.
This set of requirements proves once again that there’s much more involved than just getting the Volt to the showroom floor on time. Having a viable charging infrastructure is equally as vital for the success of any car that requires electricity to operate. Without that, we may as well just stick with petroleum.
